My Morocco Odyssey is for creatives who love words: beginner writers, wanna be authors, advanced writers looking for inspiration and unlocking writer's block, blog writers, entrepreneurs, influencers, travel writers, content writing, personal journaling and so on. It's also for photography lovers who love the world of observation, collecting memories and telling stories with a gallery of exceptional photographs. We will explore color photography and black and white photography using an iPhone. We will also explore editing apps to maximize the quality of your photographs for both personal and professional use. We also explore the use of AI to fast track your writing projects and discover how to use AI as a personal writing coach.
Why Morocco...
Morocco offers the traveler the ultimate experience. It touches your heart long before you understand why. Its people are warm and inviting. Its land is an intoxicating contrast of snow-peaked rugged mountains, lush fertile plains surrounded by desert dunes, forests of date palms, valleys of roses, and coastal paradises. Much of the country remains raw and authentic while the rest chases a modern world, and it is succeeding far better than many others have.
TV satellite dishes compete for space with minarets and ancient rooftops. Restaurants and cafes wouldn't look out of place in high-end London, New York or Paris. Moroccan fashion, interior design and architecture now compete with the best in the world. Its influences are many. Its colors are vibrant. If you love dry heat, you will love from April to July and from October to early December. Moroccans love music: their traditional music, 'Gnaoua', will live as a rhythm in your footsteps long after you arrive home.
I was drawn to travel to this exotic country because of the bedtime stories of my father. He had a passion for Arabian horses and for the magic of life. His stories sent me to sleep, dreaming of dark-eyed, fetching men robed in long white dress, racing horses across a scorching desert as whispering winds shaped the mammoth dunes, like a slow moving tortoise.
In my dreams there were camel caravans disappearing into orange sunsets and nomads passing around platters of fresh dates by an oasis. Copper merchants made cooking utensils, and the smell of saffron filled the air. My dreams made me yearn for a slower pace of life.
I wondered about the culture and a cuisine known for its aromatic spices. On my first day there, I knew it was always a given that I come and fall so deeply in love with this country. Trying to find words to explain my passion for Morocco leaves me speechless because words that aptly describe Morocco today are not yet written.
In a country that remains authentic, spiritual, exotic and the number one destination on the minds of global travelers, I will lead you on an unimaginable journey of personal transformation through my writing and photography adventure across Morocco. No matter what your writing project might be, I have curated an adventure to awaken the voice of your heart, and make your creative spirit come alive. After thirteen years of traversing the globe, undertaking eight distinct pilgrimages to Morocco, spanning over 20,000 kilometers from the untamed, windswept shores of the Atlantic to the lofty peaks of the High and Mid Atlas, meandering through the enchanting landscapes of the Dades Gorges and the Valley of the Roses, and finally, sinking barefoot into the warm embrace of Sahara's sands, my odyssey is an eloquent love affair with the authentic spirit of Morocco. This profound connection, nurtured through immersive experiences in the labyrinthine alleys of Imperial cities and ancient Medinas, expertly guided by local connoisseurs, has left an indelible mark on her heart. Now, I fervently yearn to extend this heartfelt embrace to kindred spirits like you.
My writing journey encompasses diverse genres, from formula-writing - like 'Stepping Out', a poignant memoir titled 'The Seagull, An Unexpected Love Story,' and my debut fiction novel, 'Seagulls on the Ganges.' My multifaceted writing interests extends to travel reviews for TripAdvisor, where my insights have a readership of 22,000+, plus I love nothing more than to weave a captivating narrative on my blog.
Beyond turning words into stories, I am an impassioned photographer, using my camera as a narrative tool to capture the very essence of what sparks interest in my surroundings. DAY 1
You will be collected from the airport and delivered to your luxury five-star accommodation in Casablanca.
Your odyssey begins in Casablanca - the vibrant coastal city in Morocco, offering a unique blend of history, culture, and modernity. This country will wake up your senses as you taste, see and feel a way of life very different to your own. Have your camera ready to capture spectacular moments and memories. Don't forget your notebook. Be ready to jot down thoughts and ideas that may become the beginning of a new story or add the very color you need to finish an existing project. Expect Morocco's stimulus to lift your levels of discovery and engagement. Come with a project in mind but be prepared to throw caution to the wind and go in a different direction. Come with blank pages and let an idea unfold, organically, inspired by the sights, sounds and colors of this ancient land and the insights of your fellow travelers.

This marvel of Islamic architecture, is a must-visit. It stands proudly on the Atlantic coastline, boasting intricate details and exquisite craftsmanship. A guided tour will enable us to appreciate the mosque's grandeur, and photographers will love the stunning view of the sea from its location.
Old Medina:
Immerse yourself in the historic charm of Casablanca by exploring the Old Medina. Wander through narrow alleyways filled with traditional shops, spice markets, and local artisans. The Old Medina provides a glimpse into the city's rich past and offers opportunities to engage with the local culture.
Art Deco Architecture:
Casablanca boasts a remarkable collection of Art Deco architecture, reflecting its cosmopolitan history. Iconic buildings include the Casablanca Cathedral, the Cinema Rialto, and the Villa des Arts. These structures showcase the city's architectural diversity and cultural influences.

Rabat offers a rich blend of history, culture, a vibrant medina, modern districts, and a lively waterfront.

Kasbah of the Udayas (Kasbah des Oudaias): Explore this historic fortress and residential area with its narrow streets, white and blue buildings, and stunning views of the Atlantic Ocean. The Kasbah also houses the Andalusian Gardens, providing a peaceful retreat.
Hassan Tower and Mausoleum of Mohammed V: Visit the Hassan Tower, an incomplete minaret of the Hassan Mosque, and the Mausoleum of Mohammed V, the final resting place of the late King Mohammed V and his sons. The site is known for its impressive architecture and significance in Moroccan history.
Chellah Necropolis: Discover the ancient Roman and medieval ruins at Chellah, which includes a Roman city, Islamic monuments, and a tranquil garden. It's a historical site with a peaceful atmosphere, making it a unique place to explore in Rabat.

Today we wake in in the city Tangier. Tangier is a port city located on the northern coast of Morocco. It holds strategic significance due to its proximity to the Strait of Gibraltar, which is the entrance to the Mediterranean Sea from the Atlantic Ocean. The city has a long history of being an important port for trade and maritime activities. The port of Tangier plays a vital role in connecting Morocco to Europe and facilitating the movement of goods and people between the two continents. Additionally, Tangier has been a crossroads of various cultures and civilizations throughout history, contributing to its unique character and charm. Kasbah Museum and the Medina: Explore the historic Kasbah of Tangier, a medieval fortress with narrow winding streets and a mix of Moroccan and Andalusian architecture. Visit the Kasbah Museum, located within the Kasbah, to learn more about Tangier's history. Wander through the bustling Medina, filled with shops, cafes, and vibrant street life.
Grand Socco and Petit Socco: Stroll through the Grand Socco, a large square at the entrance to the Medina, and experience the lively atmosphere of the local market. Nearby, visit Petit Socco, a smaller square known for its historic cafes and as a gathering place for artists and writers.
Tangier American Legation Museum: Explore the Tangier American Legation Museum, which is the only historic landmark of the United States located outside of the country. The museum showcases the cultural and historical ties between the United States and Morocco.
The Borj En-Naam Museum opened its doors just recently (2022) and provides an overview of the Life & Times of one of Tangier's most distinguished travelers - Abu Abdallah Muhammad ibn Battuta (1304-1368).

DAY 5
Those who love the early rise will find joy in the many walking tracks around Chefchaouen. After breakfast at your accommodation we explore this otherworldly city. Founded in 1471, Chefchaouen served as a Moorish fortress for Spanish exiles. Over the centuries, the city grew and became a hub for Jews and Christian converts alike. But the city is best recognized for its powder-blue buildings that mirror the cloudless Moroccan sky. Stepping back in time, into another world, we taste Chefchaouen’s charming Medina. Beware the bargains and prepare to haggle. What will your bounty be? Brass teapots, ceramics, tagine clay pots decorated with delicate artistry silver plates, jewelry, blankets made from sheep’s wool or camel hair, shawls, or Aztec-patterned bags or Moroccan slippers?
We’ll taste the town’s signature tagine: a typical Moroccan-style dish made with fish, vegetables, a combination of the warmest, aromatic spices and oil served on a bed of fluffy couscous. And, we'll talk about the idea of including food narratives to color your writing.
Wander the Blue Medina: Explore the charming streets of the Medina, which is the old town of Chefchaouen. The buildings are painted in various shades of blue, creating a unique and picturesque atmosphere. Take your time to stroll through the narrow alleyways, shop for local handicrafts, and enjoy the tranquil surroundings.
Kasbah Museum: Visit the Kasbah, a fortress in the heart of the Medina, and explore the Kasbah Museum. This museum provides insights into the history and culture of Chefchaouen, and the rooftop offers panoramic views of the city and the surrounding mountains.
Outa el Hammam Square: This central square in the Medina is a hub of activity. Surrounded by cafes and restaurants, it's a great place to people-watch, drink the local coffee or Morocco mint tea and soak in the local atmosphere. The square is also home to the Grand Mosque and the distinctive octagonal tower.
Chefchaouen's unique ambiance, combined with its natural beauty, makes it a must-visit destination for those seeking a tranquil and visually striking experience in Morocco. Photographers will love this city...for extraordinary captures.

Fez, often referred to as the cultural and spiritual heart of Morocco, is a city with a rich history and a well-preserved medieval old town. After breakfast at your accommodation we will choose an array of sight-seeing options in Fez with local guides that might include ...
Explore the Medina of Fez: The Medina of Fez is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the largest and oldest medieval cities in the world. Wander through its narrow winding streets, with your guide, visit the bustling souks (markets), and discover the historical and architectural gems such as the Bou Inania Madrasa, Al-Attarine Madrasa, and the tanneries.
Al-Qarawiyyin University and Mosque: Founded in 859 AD, Al-Qarawiyyin is considered the oldest existing, continually operating educational institution in the world. While non-Muslims cannot enter the mosque, they are allowed to explore the university's library and other areas.
Chouara Tannery: Visit one of the oldest tanneries in the world, the Chouara Tannery. Witness the traditional leather-dyeing process, where workers use natural ingredients to treat and dye leather. You can view the tannery from surrounding shops or take a guided tour for a more in-depth experience.

Fez has a thriving artisan community keeping traditional crafts alive. On our second day in this enchanting city we will engage in a wide variety of creative activities allowing you to appreciate the city's cultural heritage. Be prepared for sensory overload. The noise and smells can be overwhelming. Mosque minarets compete in the sky with satellite dishes and ancient rooftops. Old and new crash together and align. Blind alleys lead to spectacular, intimate squares with ancient tiled fountains. In the background you'll hear a rhythmic-hammer beating like an ancient song, created by the the copper beaters. Traditions are around every corner.

Moroccan Tile Mosaic Workshops: Fes is renowned for its intricate tilework, and you can participate in mosaic workshops to create your own Moroccan-style mosaic tile. Learn about the traditional patterns and colors used in Moroccan design while working with skilled artisans.
Leather Tanning and Leathercraft: The tanneries of Fes are famous for producing high-quality leather goods. Visit a traditional tannery to witness the leather-dyeing process and then explore leathercraft workshops. You can try your hand at designing and crafting your leather products, such as wallets, bags, or belts. You will definitely want to take an example of this fine craftmanship home with you.
Handweaving and Textile Workshops: Fes is known for its vibrant textiles, including intricate carpets, blankets, and fabrics. Visit a local weaving workshop to observe the traditional techniques used in creating these textiles. Some places may offer hands-on weaving experiences where you can create your small piece.

Take an hour's drive to discover Volubilis & its fascinating Roman ruins adorned with beautiful mosaics and colorful tiles depicting Roman mythology. From there you will travel to Meknes. Your tour may include Bab Mansour & then to Place El-Hedime (Square of Ruins) which links the medina and the Kasbah, Musée Dar Jamaï, a museum showing modern Moroccan arts, woodwork, ceramics, carpets, costumes, jewelry and metalwork.
Afterwards, you will return to your accommodation in Fes for dinner.

Today is a free day. Retrace your footsteps in Fez and practice your photography skills. Plan your own excursion. (Luxury Tours Morocco can help you plan a memorable moment) or rest in readiness for our big drive to the Sahara desert tomorrow. Take advantage of the spa and Hamman.
Write with me and develop your project out on your hotel's balcony where you can relax and unwind sipping a Moroccan Mint Tea with Moroccan pastries in the comfort of your surrounds, letting your imagination wander.

DAY 9
After an early breakfast, we leave Fez for the desert. Along the way we'll stop at the town of Ifrane called the 'Switzerland of Morocco'. Known for its unique architecture, which is distinct from typical Moroccan cities, the town was established during the French colonial period, and its architecture reflects European influence, with Swiss-style chalets, red-tiled roofs, and tree-lined streets. The city is surrounded by beautiful natural landscapes, including forests and lakes. The nearby Ifrane National Park is known for its cedar forests and diverse wildlife.
Then we continue to Midelt for lunch before moving to Errachidia & then Erfoud, a small town in southeastern Morocco known as the gateway to the Sahara. We stop at Merzouga where we enter the area of the dunes arriving at our luxurious five-star private camp in Erg Chebbi desert. Expect luxury, delicious traditional cuisine and warm heartfelt welcome..
We will engage in various activities, including camel treks to explore the dunes, sandboarding on the slopes of the dunes, and taking 4x4 excursions to local villages through the desert. The tranquil and mesmerizing desert landscape attracts photographers from around the world.
The region is home to nomadic Berber communities who have adapted to the harsh desert environment. We will visit one of these villages and at night grab front row seats for stargazing after dinner, and listening to traditional music around a campfire.
One of the highlights of visiting Erg Chebbi is witnessing the spectacular colors during sunrise and sunset. The shifting sands create a dynamic display of light and shadow, providing a unique and unforgettable experience for both writers and photographers.

In the tranquil embrace of the desert, our morning unfolds to the ethereal canvas of a desert sunrise, accompanied by the comforting aroma of freshly brewed coffee. A sublime journey commences with the indulgence of a traditional Berber breakfast, setting the stage for a day of enchanting desert activities. Strolls amidst the mesmerizing dunes, graceful camel rides, and a captivating visit to a local village await our discerning exploration.
Nestled within this awe-inspiring landscape is our sanctuary—a five-star luxury tent camp, a haven of refinement amid the arid expanse. Here, amidst the boundless silence of the desert, we are invited to disconnect from the digital realm. Enveloped by the tranquility, one can anticipate the onset of inspiration, akin to the grains of sand dancing swiftly on the desert breeze.
As the desert wind sweeps through, mirroring the rhythmic ebb and flow of creativity, it delicately reshapes the contours of the vast landscape. DAY 12
Leaving the desert early we set our gps for the city of Ouarzazate stopping along the way at the spectacular Dades Gorges. The Dades Gorges, or 'Gorges du Dadès', is a stunning natural canyon located in the High Atlas Mountains of Morocco near the town of Boumalne Dades. The gorges are carved by the Dades River, creating a dramatic and picturesque landscape discovered on a scenic drive along the Dades Valley, which is renowned for its breathtaking views of kasbahs, traditional mud-brick villages, and lush oases. This road through the gorges is known as the "Road of a Thousand Kasbahs."
The region is dotted with traditional Berber villages and kasbahs, providing insight into the local culture and history. You may have the chance to interact with the local Berber communities and experience their way of life, time permitting. The Dades Gorges are not only a geological wonder but also a cultural and historical treasure, making them a popular destination for those seeking both natural beauty and a connection with Morocco's rich heritage.
Next stop Ouarzazate. The city is often referred to as the "door of the desert" and is known for its historic kasbahs, film studios, and stunning landscapes.
Over dinner, we will plan the following morning to take in some of the local sights which may include
Ait Ben Haddou is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and a well-preserved kasbah (fortified village) located just outside Ouarzazate. Explore the narrow streets, ancient architecture, and take in panoramic views of the surrounding desert. The site has served as a backdrop for numerous films and TV series.
The Atlas Film Studios is one of the world's largest film studios. Take a guided tour to see various film sets, props, and learn about the history of filmmaking in the region. Many famous movies, including Lawrence of Arabia and Gladiator, were filmed here.
The Draa Valley: Take a scenic drive to the nearby Draa Valley, known for its lush palm groves, ancient ksar (fortified village) ruins, and traditional Berber villages. The valley offers a picturesque setting against the backdrop of the Atlas Mountains.

DAY 13
After breakfast we take the road to Marrakech passing over the High Atlas Mountains . The distance between Ouarzazate and Marrakech is approximately 200 kilometers, and the journey will take around 4 to 5 hours by car, depending on traffic and road conditions. We'll stop along the way for lunch.
Our journey involves crossing the High Atlas Mountains, offering breathtaking views of the rugged landscapes. The Tizi n'Tichka Pass is a notable point on the route, providing panoramic views of the surrounding mountains.
Along the route, you'll come across small Berber villages, providing insight into local life and culture. Traditional mud-brick houses, terraced fields, and friendly locals are common sights. Overall, the journey from Ouarzazate to Marrakech is an opportunity to witness the diverse geography of Morocco, from the arid desert surroundings of Ouarzazate to the mountainous landscapes of the High Atlas, and finally, the bustling city life of Marrakech.
As we descend from the mountains, the landscape transitions to the plains surrounding Marrakech, also called the 'Red City'. The vibrant city is famous for its vibrant souks, historic medina, and iconic landmarks like the Koutoubia Mosque and Jardin Majorelle.

Jemaa el-Fnaa Square:
This bustling square is the heart of Marrakech and a UNESCO World Heritage site. By day, it's filled with market stalls, snake charmers, and street performers. By night, it transforms into a lively food market with delicious local cuisine. Exploring the square and its surroundings provides a true taste of Moroccan culture.
Medina and Souks:
Marrakech's historic medina is a maze of narrow winding streets, traditional riads, and bustling souks (markets). The souks offer a variety of goods, including spices, textiles, ceramics, and traditional crafts. Don't miss the opportunity to navigate the labyrinthine streets and experience the vibrant atmosphere.
Koutoubia Mosque:
The Koutoubia Mosque is the largest mosque in Marrakech and an iconic symbol of the city. Its impressive minaret dominates the skyline. A choice between a drive into the mountains to have lunch at Richard Branson's Tamadot or a visit to the famous seaside town, Essaouira.
DAY 16
After breakfast, depending on your flight schedules, we’ll transfer you to the Airport of Marrakesh or Casablanca and help you with registration formalities and special flight requirements before your departure.
Our tears of farewell will acknowledge our deep connection because of an experience shared and a bond never to be broken. Together we will let go the old to invite in the new. We will have tasted our bravery and been witness to the bravery of others. I expect we will remain in each other’s hearts forever.
